Founder of Merida passes away

Ike Tseng passed away on Jan 30, 2012 at the age of 81.

Ike founded Merida Industry in 1972.

He was a man whose vision, leadership, inspiration and dedication over 40 years have successfully built Merida into the best global quality bicycle production company and a leading brand in the world.

Ike was also a statesman for the industry, leading multiple industry organizations. He served as a multi-term chairman of Taiwan Bicycle Exporters’ Association transforming Taiwan into the world’s leader of innovative high quality bicycles.

He had a passion for bicycles and the bicycle industry. He shared this commitment with everyone he worked with.

Ike Tseng, was a true pioneer and legend.

Many in the UK will not know of Ike, but his influence will have been felt by many.

Ike created his own welding robots to guarantee frame production quality long before many makers had even grasped the idea of quality.

He created engineering and production facilities which are the envy of the bike producing world, and with the A-Team he helped develop Taiwanese super component manufacturers, nurturing them to develop ever more advanced products which now benefit us all either on bikes or as aftermarket accessories.

Under his guidance, Merida was the first bicycle producer in Taiwan to float on the stock exchange, and his legacy leaves a company worth £300m, growing strongly and firmly upholding his values.

He will be sadly missed by many in Taiwan’s bicycle industry.

His son Michael is President of Merida, and he continues the values and work his father created with Merida, The A-Team, the Taiwanese Bicycle Exporters Association.

Ikes funeral will be held on March 11th at Merida. It is traditional for Taiwanese business leaders to have their funeral service at the business they created.

Our thoughts are with his family.

We would advise you to cease using the bicycle until the fork is replaced.

Please contact the bicycle dealer / store from where you purchased the bicycle to book the bicycle in for the fork to be replaced. Please ask the store to contact us with the model details and frame size so we can send the correct coloured fork.

Report from the Jon Egging Memorial Coast to Coast ride.

It has been a long and emotional year with our RAF friends.

In March we agreed to support a team of 20 pilots from the Red Arrows and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) in their charity bike ride – 400 miles in 4 days from St Davids Head to Lowestoft.

These guys were non-cyclists so we provided Road Ride 93 bikes, Alpina Pheos helmets and Birzman tools as well as plenty of advice and training.

The year started well with us producing tens of thousands of posters with RAF and Merida images and a mini catalogue on the back – the pilots gave them away at all the air shows through the season, and we attended a couple of big events sandwiched between the Red Arrows and BBMF displaying to over 150,000 people!

The year took its first terrible turn when Red 4 – Jon Egging was tragically killed in an accident after finishing a display at the Bournemouth Airshow.

In honour of Jon, the cycle ride was renamed and his wife Emma set up a charity in his name with the aim of helping disadvantaged youngsters. Emma also stepped up to take Jons place on the ride.

The ride itself was a superb effort by all involved.

The MUK truck was in attendance as a service wagon with Jason as a mechanic, the riders had a full support crew who did a phenomenal job, keeping everybody rolling, hydrated and fed. There was a permanent police escort, police motorcycle outriders, masseurs and a physiotherapist!
