Merida engineers believed that wind rather than weight was the biggest enemy of our Lampre-Merida pro tour team.
Aero bikes had existed before, but often the downsides were that they were heavier and delivered a harsher ride than conventional bikes.
So they set out to create a light and comfortable everyday aero bike.
The test looked at the aerodynamic efficiency, the power figure, is the wattage required to ride at 45kph (just short of 28mph).
So we fell one place short of our aim to be the fastest bike on the market, needing 0.94% more power to maintain the 45km/h speed.
With the greatest flex, the Reacto is significantly more comfortable than the 2nd place BMC - flexing 60% more than the BMC.
The Cervelo may be the top in terms of least power required, but is a long way behind in the comfort stakes.
WHY THE LAMPRE MERIDA TEAM WENT REACTO?
TOUR magazine analysed the difference between Aero and standard road bikes of the top brands.
The times were based on scientific modelling of a 100km course with the following profile:
The superior aerodynamics of the Reacto Team meant that it was 2 minutes faster than their previous team bike the Merida Scultura SL, saving the riders 22 watts of power at 30mph.
In 2012 the Lampre team did not score any victories. In 2013 with Merida they won 7 victories, and with the Reacto in 2014 they scored 14 victories!
“In the course of just one season, the REACTO has become
the standard working tool of our LAMPRE-MERIDA pro riders. With the new LITE model,
its outstanding performance becomes available as well for smaller budgets.”
