Seven podium finishes for Multivan - Merida at Cape Epic - and all on the Big.Nine
The Multivan Merida Biking Team finished the Cape Epic stage race with an outstanding record: Riders of the Multivan-Merida team finished on the podium seven times, getting two stage wins. In the overall classification, the best team finished in second and all teams made it into the top10.

In the sport of mountain biking, the eight-day stage race Cape-Epic is considered as one of the hardest tests for athletes and equipment. That’s why finishing at the top regularly is all the more valuable. With Hannes Genze and Jochen Käß, the Multivan Merida Biking Team had two riders in striking position to the leading duo of Christoph Sauser and Burry Stander right from the start of the race. In the end, the riders were more than satisfied to finish in second.
On their way, Genze and Käß managed to win one of the seven stages, as did their team mates José Hermdia and Ralph Näf. Andreas Kugler and guest rider Markus Kaufmann showed consistent performances throughout the week which brought them to sixth in the overall classification. Thus team manager Andreas Rottler concluded: “We have achieved what we had set as our goals, which was a stage win and a podium finish in the overall. Now we have even won two stages – thanks to some good team work and our excellent equipment.”
In a race of this calibre, reliable equipment is one of the most decisive factors. The bikes get an incredible amount of punishment seen the tough conditions and daily stages of five and more hours. At the Cape Epic, the riders of the Multivan Merida Biking Team were all riding the recently launched race bike Big.Nine as an ultimate test of strength. The entire team’s performance shows just how reliable the equipment used by the Multivan Merida Biking Team really is.
For the athletes, the Cape Epic also fitted in nicely as a preparation for the worldcup season that is due to start in South Africa in three weeks. The strong placing of all athletes of Multivan-Merida are a good reason to be optimistic for the first worldcup round.
