The highlight of our Press Camp 2011 has made a significant contribution to the Twentyniners’ continuous triumph – especially with respect to marathon and long-distance racing. On the BIG.NINE, Hannes Genze and Jochen Käß scored 2nd rank at last year’s Cape Epic while MULTIVAN MERIDA achieved a total of three Top Ten positions. Also during multiday competitions such as the legendary Transalp or Trans Schwarzwald, MERIDA’s ultra-light interpretation of a racing 29er demonstrated impressively that “big wheels” offer unmatched advantages – provided that the realization of the concept is coherent.

Our BIG.NINE’s heart is a frame whose „Nano Matrix“ carbon fibre mix keeps the weight brilliantly below 1100 g* and guarantees superb stiffness data as well. The BIG.NINE’s claim to leadership is also underlined by the BB30 bottom bracket whose stiffness data are again 20 % higher than those of the 26" O.NINE. The “Structure Element” frame combines internal sleeves with “Tube-to-Tube” technology for load-bearing capacity optimization.

This provides great stiffness exactly there where the pilot’s power is fed into the system. Simultaneously, elements like the “Flex Stay” rear stay and the unbelievably light PRC seat post (150 g) with Selle Italia “Monolink” clamping yield outstanding comfort.

Our R&D experts have paid special attention to a 29er’s two “sticking points”: The remarkably short and racing orientated design of the asymmetric 440 mm* chain stays guarantees awe-inspiring agility. On the other hand, the similarly short shape of the “X-Taper” head tube ensures that the 29er’s naturally higher front end  remains as low-positioned as possible to meet not only the  demands of our MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM pro riders. The sloping seat tube offers a Direct Top Mount derailleur bracket while the rear dropouts are constructed for 12 mm thru-axles. All this proves: MERIDA has understood the “29er concept” to the full extent. Like all other team bikes, also the BIG.NINE features a Sram drivetrain for effective propulsion – though with an X.0 transmission ratio specifically adapted to the different performance conditions. Another detail not ignored by MERIDA!
