Research & Development

MERIDA bikes are accompanied by carefully selected accessories from all over the world. Our most competent manufacturing experts work in our Taiwanese main plant while decentrally organised distributors manage local marketing in many countries. Being the “backbone” of all new MERIDA bikes, frame development is “Made in Germany” – there, one of the world’s most demanding markets expects extremely high product quality. In the German home of the world’s best car producers, a lot of top-level designers and engineers also enjoy utilising their skills within the bicycle sector.

The development of new MERIDA models is often supported by external specialists. Consequently, we combine pure scientific research such as Data Recording (EsslingenUniversity) with the brilliant (as well as prize-winning!) ideas of design studios like SLOGDESIGN or PDD to realise our exemplary frame shapes. Against this background, our own R&D (Research & Development) Department creates new concepts, develops computer-assisted CAD models and builds prototypes. The latter are tested mechanically as well as during actual field trials along challenging courses of all kinds – actively supported by the know-how and enthusiasm of our complete MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM!

As a matter of course, this complexity is necessary for a successful combination of technological perfection and breath-taking aesthetics. On the other hand, MERIDA bikes must not be just cold pieces of art – they also have to carry the full power of sportive ambition. Therefore, a thoroughbred MERIDAmodel invariably has to represent a real “holistic” solution to enter this catalogue – and to be introduced to you!

Save downhill riding: Frames* must feature a head tube stiffness above 80 Nm/Degree to enable chatter-free downhill cycling. That’s why all new frame projects are thoroughly checked on our own test benches to guarantee best possible stiffness data before serial production will start to run.
*Referring to rigid-fork road frames

Direct propulsion: A frame’s BB stiffness essentially determines the effective amount of pedal power being finally transferred to the road. Thanks to our in-house BB test bench (identical with “Tour”- / “BIKE”-magazine’s equipment), we are able to optimize our products according to actual frame deformation, even simulation the three-dimensional deformation initiated by the chain pull.
