MTB TEAM RacersJOSÉ ANTONIO HERMIDA

The season 2014 started on a high for José Hermida: At first the Spaniard gave his younger teammates a chance to shine at the Sunshine Cup in Cyprus. But some weeks later teaming up with Rudi van Houts he won the prologue of the Cape Epic stage race in South Africa, becoming the first wearer of the leader’s jersey. But on the third stage Rudi van Houts crashed heavily and was forced to abandon, which also put Hermida out of the race. When the Worldcup season started the Spaniard showed that he still is a factor to be reckoned with: Both in Pietermaritzburg and in Cairns he finished on the podium in 5th, and in Nove Mesto he missed out narrowly on the podium crossing the finish line in 6th. In Windham and Albstadt on the other hand Hermida had two less-than-stellar races. Combined with an 8th place in Mont Sainte-Anne and a 10th place in Méribel this put him in 7th in the Worldcup’s overall standings. At both the World and the European championships Hermida had to settle for a 9th place, but he managed to add another Spanish national championship title to his palmares.
For 2015 José Hermida wants to work on his explosiveness in order to keep himself in the leading positions in crosscountry Worldcup races from the very start. If he succeeds in doing so throughout the year ahead, his chances for a ticket to Rio de Janeiro are good. This would be the Spaniard’s fifth participation at Olympic games – something that is only granted to very few athletes.
