MERIDA mountain bike pros to ride in 2014 for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles

• Newcomer Julian Schelb driving a California Beach
• World champion Dahle-Flesjå and team-mates travelling in Multivan Comfortlines

Alcudia / Hannover, 15 February 2014 – This year's presentation of the Multivan Merida Biking Team on Majorca was the starting signal for the 2014 season and at the same time a continuation of the successful collaboration between MERIDA and title sponsor Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, one of the leading manufacturers of vans, MPVs and camper vans.

Whenever the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM appears for a race in 2014, eleven Multivans, two Crafter panel vans and a Crafter camper van will be there with them. "We simply couldn't manage without these vehicles. We use them to get to every domestic and international race and to transport all our equipment," emphasised team manager Fabian Aust.

And their track record is impressive: in the ten years of the partnership the Multivan Merida Biking Team has been German champion 16 times, European champion 15 times and world champion 12 times, as well as recording 37 victories in the World Cup.

"MERIDA is the ideal partner for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. Both produce high-quality products and are among the world's most successful teams in their sector," says Bram Schot, Member of the Brand Board of Management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles responsible for Sales and Marketing.

Julian Schelb, under-23 vice-world champion and newcomer to the team has opted for a California Beach with pop-up roof. "I'm looking forward immensely to travelling around in future in the California. If I ever get tired, I can also sleep perfectly well in the vehicle. It's really a unique thing in our field - to have a sponsor like Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles that has such cool models."

Gunn-Rita Dahle-Flesjå, the reigning world champion in the UCI Mountainbike Marathon, in which altitudes of 94 km and 4,400 metres have to be overcome, has also been an enthusiastic Multivan driver for many years, as have her team-mates José Antonio Hermida, Rudi van Houts, Thomas Litscher and Ondrej Cink.

Both the Multivan and the California are ideal base vehicles for sports professionals and amateurs alike. Anyone travelling with a mountain bike needs a flexible, reliable car with lots of space. With its movable seats and flexible interior concept the Multivan provides enough room to accommodate every bit of biking equipment inside the vehicle, safely protected from theft or inclement weather.

During this year's training camp from 11th to 17th February in Alcudia, Majorca, the cycling pros and the international sports journalists in attendance will also have the opportunity to try out the Amarok Canyon, Cross Caddy, Multivan BlueMotion and the T5 Rockton Expedition.

WORLD BICYCLE RELIEF

In the developing world reliable transportation changes everything.

People in rural Africa suffer every day from the lack of transport. Walking is often the only available form of transport. Without access to education, healthcare and economic development, people often live in poverty and suffer from treatable diseases.

World Bicycle Relief is mobilizing people through the Power of Bicycles; we envision a world where distance no longer prevents access to healthcare, education and economic opportunity.

The Bicycle is a simple, sustainable tool that increases the distance traveled by 5 times, the carrying capacity by 4 times and saves up to 3 hours every 16 kilometers traveled.
