As the summer gets into full swing so those the cycling season. World champion Rui Costa first competes at the Tour de Suisse, where he won the two most recent editions. Then his attention focuses on the Tour de France. Teaming up with other equipment suppliers of TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA, MERIDA has set out to further optimise the REACTO EVO.
Aerodynamically optimised road bikes offer advantages that can decide on who is the winner and who is not on race day. That's why TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA has opted for the REACTO EVO as its team bike for this season. Race-ready with power measurement, computer, bottle cages and pedals, the team edition of this road bike weighs 7.25 kilograms. So there still is some room to meet the weight limit as set by cycling's governing body UCI. To make sure Rui Costa has the best-possible equipment at his disposal for the Tour de Suisse and even more importantly the Tour de France, MERIDA has taken a careful look at the world champion's workhorse.
By following a strategy of small steps MERIDA's R&D department has succeeded in getting the weight of Rui Costa's race-ready roadbike to exactly 6.8 kilograms, the UCI's minimum weight requirement. "Knocking almost half a kilogram off the team bike was not an easy task - but after all we are competing in cycling's formula one", Jürgen Falke comments as the head of MERIDA's R&D department. By changing the fibre layout of both the frame and the fork and opting for as little paint as possible, the weight has been reduced by 80 grams. Another 50 grams are saved by building the aero seatpost with its integrated Di2 battery from one piece. There are only two frames of this type in existence, and due to their low weight they are dubbed the "REACTO KOM", with "KOM" standing for "king of the mountain".
Meeting the target weight of 6.8 kilograms would not have been a feasible task without the help of other equipment suppliers of TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA, however. Thanks to its aluminium bearing cups, FSA's headset is particularly lightweight. Made of carbon, VISION's brand-new "Trimax Carbon" handlebar and "Metron" stem (separate press release in the attachment) also help to lower the weight, as do the ultralight carbon bottle cages from ELITE. Being the team's wheel supplier, FULCRUM also made its contribution by building a particularly lightweight set of wheels for Rui Costa. These wheels combine 35 millimetre high tubular carbon rims with hubs fully made of carbon, and the body made of plasma-coated aluminium saves some additional grams.
The result is spectacular not only on the scales: Ready for racing, Rui Costa's REACTO KOM comes in at exactly 6.8 kilograms and still offers all the aerodynamical advantages of the REACTO EVO series. Thus the world champion can rely on the best-possible equipment for his season's highlights. MERIDA wishes him and all the other riders of TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA good luck for both the Tour de Suisse and the Tour de France. May the summer begin!
