Przemyslaw Niemiec gets second Vuelta stage win

Przemyslaw Niemiec gets second Vuelta stage win

The climb to Lagos de Covadonga is one of the legendary mountaintop finishes at the Vuelta a España. Exactly one week after Winner Anacona, Przemyslaw Niemiec got his name on the list of winners here, celebrating the second stage win for TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA.

After Chris Horner's forfeit the riders of TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA were free to chase their own ambitions without having to care about the overall standings at the Vuelta a España. And the men in blue, fuchsia and MERIDA green are making good use of this freedon thus far. Exactly one week after the stage win of Colombian Winner Anacona, 34 year-old Przemyslaw Niemiec got to celebrate a prestigious stage win. This victory is all the more precious for the Pole as he hardly ever got to chase his own ambitions throughout his career.

At 152.2 kilometres the 15th stage of the Vuelta a España was not particularly long. But it did feature a tough finale with the final climb up to Lagos de Covadonga. Early on in the stage Przemyslaw Niemiec managed to get into the group of the day. On the final ascent the Polish rider from TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA was clearly the strongest climber of the five attackers, and so he tried to pull off the seemingly impossible: Not to be caught by the overall favourites when they started to exchange blows.

In the end it was a terribly close call, and fans of TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA are likely to have grown a couple of years older on the final kilometres. But Przemyslaw Niemiec proved to be tough as nails: Five seconds was all that was left of his advantage on the finish line with the attacking duo of Valverde and Rodriguez closing in quickly. But it was enough to celebrate his first stage win ever in a Grand Tour. All the better for TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA and Niemiec that he managed to win such a prestigious stage as the one to Lagos de Covadonga. Winner Anacona on the other hand lost over three minutes today and dropped out of the top10 in the overall standings.
