José Hermida extends contract until end of 2016

The MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM can count on one of its figurehead riders for two more years: Spaniard José Hermida has extended his contract with the team by two more years until the end of 2016. He has already set his sights on Rio de Janeiro.

Finishing 2014’s season in 7th, José Hermida was the best-placed rider of the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM in the world ranking. At an age of 36, Hermida still can be counted on: He finished on the podium at two Worldcup races last season, won the national cross-country championships in Spain and was the fastest at the prologue of the Cape Epic stage race, teaming up with Rudi van Houts. Even after ten seasons in the colors of the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM, José Hermida is still full of beans. And the Spaniard has already set his sights on the next Olympic summer games due to be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Thanks to getting his contract extended by another two years until the end of 2016, Hermida can do so in due peace.

„After 10 years the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM has become much more than a racing team and an employer to me: It has almost evolved into some kind of second family“, Hermida explains with a wink.

Just to add more seriously: „Getting my contract extended until after the next Olympic games is a sign of huge appreciation, but also an obligation. I want to continue to be a top competitor in the cross-country Worldcup next year. If I succeed in doing so, getting selected for the Olympic games should be a given. And then I want to be in my best shape and fight for a medal at what will be my fifth participation at Olympic summer games.“

As the manager of the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM, Fabian Aust stresses that José Hermida is more than just a safe bet for top results in races of the cross-country Worldcup: „Thanks to his cheerful nature, his enormous experience and his highly professional attitude, José Hermida is a key role model for the other team riders. He makes sure that everybody remains focussed on what is essential without missing out on the fun. But I’m also convinced that he still has what it takes to compete for the top spots in international races. For these reasons I am delighted to have extended the contract with Hermida by another two years.“
