Final rehearsal for the Worlds in Windham

Final rehearsal for the Worlds in Windham

Three weeks before the World championships the athletes of the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM had a last opportunity to check their form in Windham, United States. Finishing in 7th, Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjå missed out on a podium spot by half a minute. In the men’s race Ondrej Cink finished in 10th after a strong start.

The biggest challenges in Windham were the heat and the deep dust that covered rocks and roots, reduced the visibility and made it hard to breath properly. When training in the week leading up to the race Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjå of the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM had already felt that she was not in her best shape yet, so she decided to attack from the start. And indeed she returned as the race leader from the short start loop. „That fast start turned out to have been too much and I paid for it later on. Unfortunately I was not strong enough to finish on the podium today, which is a little bit disappointing“, the Norwegian said after she had finished the race in 7th. „I will return back home now to recover, and hopefully my big form will come in time for the next two important races in Val di Sole and in Andorra.“

In the man’s race Ondrej Cink showed a strong start. MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM’s Czech rider had come to Windham with high ambitions, but he got caught in the dense traffic on the start loop. Riding the fastest lap of all riders, Cink moved up to 6th place early on. „I really would have liked to make it to the podium as I like this course so much. But I was struggling with cramps in my legs in the finale and lost a couple of positions to finish in 10th. Now I have to go for a podium result in Val di Sole or at the World championships“, Ondrej Cink commented. With José Hermida the team had another rider finishing in the top15: „The good thing is that I managed to ride the whole race in the top20 positions. But I still lack some explosiveness at the start, and this forces me to give chase for the remaining race.“ Crossing the line just 23 seconds after Hermida, Rudi van Houts finished the race in Windham in 17th. Thomas Litscher also looked to be on his way for a top15 result before he suffered a mechanical in the 4th of 7 laps, losing a lot of time and positions as a consequence.
