MTB Team BikesBIG.SEVEN
The latest hit from MERIDA’s R&D department has been tailor-made for the needs of the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM’s most experienced rider and 2010’s Crosscountry World champion: Due to his very active riding style, José Hermida has been a fan of bikes with 26-inch wheels, only choosing to ride twentyniner-wheeled bikes for select races. But the new 27.5-inch standard promises to offer the right mix for the Spaniard.
As the core of the BIG.SEVEN, the frame is made of «Nano Matrix Carbon» and weighs 1060 grams*, which puts it exactly in the middle of the legendary 26-inch bike O.NINE that is going to be replaced by the model with the new wheel size for the professional athletes of the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM and its twentyniner sibling BIG.NINE. The BIG.SEVEN offers a couple of innovative, practical features however: The cables are internally routed and guided throughout to make the lives of the team mechanics easier when servicing the BIG.SEVEN, and a 12mm thru axle in the rear compensates for the slightly decreased stiffness of the bigger wheel.
Apart from offering state-of-the-art stiffness in both the head tube and bottom bracket area, the focus of development for the new work tool of our top athletes was aimed at improving the frame’s vertical compliance compared to the BIG.NINE model. In general, MERIDA’s carbon hardtails offer a convincing ride thanks to a number of key technologies such as the «Flex Stay» seat stays and the use of flax fibres as part of the «Bio Fibre Damping Compound» in the rear triangle.
This increases the comfort when pedalling in the saddle and offers a maximum of vibration damping. Thanks to the BIG.SEVEN’s redesigned chain stays, the bike is even more capable of swallowing up bumps in sections where the riders are standing on the pedals. Due to that the new 27.5-inch bike is particularly well suited for technically demanding, fast XC courses.
As one of the new partners of the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM, RockShox supplies all of the team bikes with ultra lightweight SID XX suspension forks; The Sram group also delivers the 11-speed XX1 drive train, and each rider has the choice of either Gripshift or Trigger shifter options according to individual preferences. Campagnolo’s sister company Fulcrum has come aboard this year: For the pros of MMBT, the Italians have developed specific 27.5- and 29-inch wheels for both tubular tires and tubeless clinchers. These wheels are on par with the best tuning offers regarding weight, air tightness and most importantly sturdiness in racing conditions. Prologo supplies the saddles for the season 2013, and their patented «Slide Control System» offers better grip and support for the riders when climbing.
