You are wondering if you really need disc brakes on a road bike? You may be thinking of the looks, additional weight or other more subjective points, but the principle of physics cannot be denied: disc brakes under certain conditions are miles ahead of the rim brake. A fact that persuade road riders substantially more than getting an approving nod from their riding colleagues for saving a few grams.
At MERIDA we are 100 per cent convinced that disc brakes have an important role in the future of road bikes – without wanting to replace the rim brake completely. The Scultura now has disc models on all levels. We start at the top with the CF4 Carbon frame used by TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA, via the CF2 carbon frame with a slightly less aggressive geometry through to the LITE aluminium version. Due to the demands of Pro-Tour racing the CF4 frame features aggressive geometry, whilst the CF2 and LITE models offer a more relaxed riding position. However all models are ‘UCI approved’ and therefore can be used for racing. Features like 12mm through axles, modern ‘Flatmount’ disc brake mounts, MERIDA’s own ‘DISC COOLER’ technology, Sram’s new wireless Red eTap group set or the completely internal cable routing (mechanical as well as electric) demonstrate that the new SCULTURA DISC is far more than just a disc version of one of the most advanced road bikes in the world. It will open a completely new experience to road cyclists which mountain bikers and cyclo cross fans have already gone through.
Flex stay seat stays
Only 10mm thin: The ‘Flex Stay’ seat stays on the SCULTURA DISC offer a noticeable reduction of surface induced vibrations and impacts. Flax fibers (‘Bio Fiber Damping Compound’) that are woven into the carbon matrix improve the vibration damping even further.
Flat mount rear brake
The brake mount of the rear brake on our new SCULTURA DISC sits according to the ‘Flat Mount’ standard well protected within the rear triangle. This distributes the generated brake forces better onto the frame.
Our innovative ‘Disc Cooler’ utilizes aluminium ribs around the chain stay to take the generated heat away from the rear brake. Result: 35% less heat-build-up and a faster temperature reduction.
Aero tube profile
The WARP and the REACTO have started it, and in its current generation our SCULTURA also features the aerodynamically optimized ‘NACA Fastback’ tube profile. The truncated drop shape tubes enables perfect airflow at the lowest possible weight.
RAT 12mm through axles
12x100mm at the front, 12x142mm at the back: super fast to open and to close, the patented ‘RAT’ through axle system of the SCULTURA DISC follows the dimension for front and rear wheel standards set by the UCI.
The SCULTURA DISC does not just set new standards as one of the first disc road bikes in the WorldTour: The 28mm wide tyres offer maximum traction and therefor translate the improved brake power perfectly onto the road.
