BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team
After four very successful years in the WorldTour, MERIDA has formed a new team for 2017 – the BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team.
Since MERIDA’s entry into the WorldTour in 2013 as the equipment sponsor and supplier of TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA, it has grown a lot as a brand and as a manufacturer. MERIDA has been able to prove more than once that their products are on a par (if not above) the level of other leading teams. MERIDA has consistently pushed the envelope of what is technically possible and what helps the riders to achieve their goals.
In the end, the outcome of a race always comes down to the perfect combination of rider and machine and MERIDA is keen to push its sportive goals to the next level. The opportunity to join the ambitious BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team will allow the brand to do just that.
The ‘Tour of Dubai’ and the ‘Tour of Oman’ as well as the Road Racing World Championships, which took place Qatar in October 2016, have already started to introduce the world of road racing to the Gulf region and have set a clear precedent that cycling is a sport for the masses.
MERIDA is an international brand that is already available in 88 countries, but so far has little presence in the Gulf region, so Bahrain and its neighbouring countries are an interesting opportunity to develop the brand.
As a Taiwanese company with a Germany based R&D department, as well as production facilities in Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China, intercultural challenges and dealing with different political and social systems have been part of MERIDA’s day to day business since its very beginning in 1972. MERIDA is a firm believer in the unifying forces of cycling, particularly in countries where this seems to be unlikely at present. This is the reason why MERIDA can see a huge opportunity in the BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team, which will help to bring the sport of cycling with all its facets across borders and introduces it to a wider audience.
The BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team shows an impressive roster behind team captain Vincenzo Nibali. The team is built with the Grand Tours in mind without loosing the focus on the Classics and selected WorldTour races. A well balanced mixture of experienced racers and young blood will give the team the fighting power and the expertise for the upcoming 2017 season.
2017 team roster: Valerio Agnoli, Yukiya Arashiro, Manuele Boaro, Grega Bole, Nicolò Bonifazio, Borut Bozic, Jani Brajkovi, Ondrej Cink, Sonny Colbrelli, Ivan Garcia Cortina, Feng Chun Kai, Enrico Gasparotto, Tsgabu Grmay, Heinrich Haussler, Ion Ander Insausti, Ion Izaguirre Insausti, Javier Moreno, Ramunas Navardauskas, Antonio Nibali, Vincenzo Nibali, Domen Novak, David Per, Luka Pibernik, Kanstantsin Siutsou, Giovanni Visconti and Meiyin Wang.
MERIDA has a long-standing history of supporting some of the best racers in the world. This has been achieved by working with the riders of the most successful mountain bike team in the world – MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM – as well as TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA for over a decade. This means the MERIDA engineers and product development teams know how to help the riders to reach their full potential.
However, this relationship goes both ways. MERIDA doesn’t just supply the BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team with the best possible material, the brand also benefits hugely from the countless hours of training and racing under the toughest conditions which provide them with detailed feedback. This combined with their vast riding experience allows MERIDA to incorporate this knowledge into the team level bikes and into the wider range.
For 2017 the team has an array of bikes at their disposal – so that for every course, for every discipline and for every condition they have the right tool for the job. This is headed up by the award winning SCULTURA TEAM, renown for its light weight and incredible comfort. The REACTO TEAM will accompany the riders when aerodynamics and sprintability are the order of the day and for time trials the lightning fast WARP TT will come out in full force.
Depending on the movements of the UCI with regards to banning disc brakes in the peloton due to safety issues, the riders will be (or perhaps not) able to choose the new SCULTURA DISC for racing in the particularly demanding conditions of the high mountains, in wet weather or to simply benefit from the improved braking power and modulation which modern disc brakes offer.
